K9 Division
The North Florida Search Team is home to a highly skilled and dedicated K9 unit, specialized in two critical areas: Live Find and Human Remains Detection. These certified dogs are an integral part of search operations, working alongside their handlers to locate missing persons and provide closure to families and communities.
The live find K9s are trained to detect the scent of a living person, even in challenging and difficult terrain such as dense forests, collapsed buildings, or after natural disasters. These dogs can work tirelessly in all types of environments to locate individuals who may be lost or trapped.
The human remains detection K9s are specialized in locating the scent of human decomposition. These dogs play a crucial role in situations where a person has been missing for a longer period or in cases of disasters. HRD K9s help investigators find remains providing critical closure and evidence.
Both types of K9s undergo extensive, specialized training, which includes scent discrimination, obedience, and working under stress in challenging conditions. Their handlers are equally skilled, trained to interpret the dogs' behavior and work as a cohesive team to achieve successful outcomes.
Together, the North Florida Search Team’s K9 unit plays a vital role in locating missing individuals, assisting law enforcement, and providing much-needed support to communities during times of crisis. Their expertise and dedication ensure they are invaluable assets in any search operation, regardless of its complexity or environment.
